Wedding: Alana & Ben – St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church & RSA Activity Center – Montgomery, Alabama

Once upon a time, a boy and a girl met in the 10th grade. The girl liked the boy, and the boy had a crush on the girl, but it wasn’t until their senior year that the boy asked the girl to go to their school’s homecoming dance, and then to their senior prom. After that there were no more dates. They went their separate ways, off to different colleges; and didn’t cross paths again until 7 long years later. The boy’s mom and grandmother convinced him to call the girl…and a couple of years later, the boy was busy designing their wedding invitation. 🙂 (Ben also designed their save-the-date card, which told the story I just paraphrased for you!)a wedding at st bede catholic church and reception at rsa activities center in montgomery alabamaa wedding at st bede catholic church and reception at rsa activity center in montgomery alabamaThe petticoat under Alana’s Maggie Sottero gown was her “something blue”…and pinned to it was her “something borrowed” – a military ribbon that belonged to her late uncle.a wedding at st bede catholic church and reception at rsa activity center in montgomery alabamaa wedding at st bede catholic church and reception at rsa activity center in montgomery alabamaa wedding at st bede catholic church and reception at rsa activity center in montgomery alabamaa wedding at st bede catholic church and reception at rsa activity center in montgomery alabamaAlana and Ben told me that people call them “adorkable” – and it couldn’t be more accurate. On display was a wedding dress made by Alana’s great-grandmother, which was worn by Alana’s grandmother, aunt, and sister on their wedding days. On either side of the dress were trays of cookies made from family recipes: peanut butter cookies in honor of Ben’s late grandmother, and tea cookies in honor of Alana’s late grandmother.a wedding at st bede catholic church and reception at rsa activity center in montgomery alabamaPeggy McKinney created an elegant cake for the bride and an Auburn cake for the groom:a wedding at st bede catholic church and reception at rsa activity center in montgomery alabamaFor a little local flavor, Chris’ Hot Dogs made an appearance alongside the rest of their catering menu:a wedding at st bede catholic church and reception at rsa activity center in montgomery alabamaa wedding at st bede catholic church and reception at rsa activity center in montgomery alabamaThe fabulous Hunter Lawley Band kept the night going (Hunter is a college friend of Alana’s), while guests rocked out with their favors: colorful light up tambourines!a wedding at st bede catholic church and reception at rsa activities center in montgomery alabamaa wedding at st bede catholic church and reception at rsa activities center in montgomery alabamaAlana & Ben: thank you so much for letting me laugh with you – I’d go ninja for you any day!

Engagement: Melanie & JD – The Waters – Pike Road, Alabama

Every now and then, you meet a couple that you click with right away (pardon the pun). Before their engagement session, I think I spent over an hour on the phone with Melanie, and during their session I think we talked about everything from dating disasters to small town living. One thing is for sure, this Atlanta-based duo is no small town disaster – these two are just right for each other. 🙂an outdoor engagement session at the waters in pike road alabamaan atlanta couple's engagement session at the waters in pike road alabamaan atlanta couple's engagement session at the waters in pike road alabamaan atlanta couple's engagement session at the waters in pike road alabamaan atlanta couple's engagement session at the waters in pike road alabamaan atlanta couple's engagement session at the waters in pike road alabama

Portrait: Emma Grace – Hampstead – Montgomery, Alabama

Emma Grace had some big milestones in her life since the last time I saw her – she learned how to walk and got a brand new baby brother. Oh, and she learned how rock some seriously fierce candy-colored striped pants. 🙂a baby portrait session in montgomery alabamaa baby portrait session in montgomery alabamaa baby portrait session in montgomery alabamaa baby portrait session in montgomery alabamaa baby portrait session in montgomery alabama

Paris: Part 3 – The Foodie Edition

As a self-proclaimed foodie, one thing I was really looking forward to in Paris was eating. I’m not a chef. I’ve got no credentials other than the fact that I LOVE REALLY GREAT FOOD. When I go on vacation, it’s not unusual for me to plan where I’m going to eat before I decide which sights I’m going to see. You know that list of “100 Things to Eat Before You Die” that was going around on Facebook? I’ve already had 77 of them. So naturally, before my trip, my reading list was full of books like The Patisseries of Paris, and food blogger David Lebovitz became my best friend (not that he knows that).

And once I got there, you’d better believe the word “calorie” didn’t exist in my vocabulary – nor did I want it to. I wasn’t going all the way to Paris to eat like a supermodel, surviving on coffee and cigarettes. I’m 5’2″, and I run so I can eat. A supermodel I am not. So I was going to enjoy every bit of French butter flecked with crystals of fleur de sel, every glass of Côtes du Rhone, every flaky croissant, and if I wanted to have them every single day of my two week trip, I was going to. And I did. Because there was no way I was going to disappoint my sweet tooth by passing up some of the most famous names in the pastry world, such as Ladurée and Pierre Hermé; where you can’t go without trying the oh-so-popular macarons (and Pierre Hermé’s rose/raspberry/litchi confection, the Ispahan – one of the BEST things I ate during my entire trip):an american photographer traveling to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodYou can have a cup of Mariage Freres tea and hang out at Cafe de Flore, like Ernest Hemingway once did, or head to Angelina to have their famous Chocolat Chaud L’Africain (calling it “hot chocolate” would be an understatement, “rich, liquid chocolate” would be more accurate):an american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodYou can find classic French dishes of course, like steak frites at Chez Omar; or go international and visit L’As du Fallafel for some Middle Eastern goodness. Or, hit Da Rosa for a glass of sangria and a dish of risotto topped with Spanish Jambón Ibérico:an american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodYou can do one of my favorite things to do when I travel – visit an open air food market. There’s no better way to get a taste (pun intended) of what people REALLY eat. At the Bastille Market, you can pick up everything from produce to flowers, from a freshly made crepe to a little entertainment:an american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodAnd if you pay attention, you might even find the source of my company’s name: a crate full of fresh CHANTERELLE MUSHROOMS! 🙂an american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodIf the food market isn’t enough local flavor for you, you can spend the day with Chef Pino Ficara at Cook’n with Class, where I spent hours learning how to make fougasse, pain au chocolat, croissants, pain aux raisins, and more from scratch: an american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodBut if the DIY route isn’t for you, there’s no shortage of other places around Paris ready to fill you up with amazing food. 🙂an american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore foodan american wedding photographer travels to paris to explore food(There are STILL more Paris pictures to come – stay tuned!)
